Starting Enbrel (Etanercept):
What Actually Happens

If your doctor just prescribed Enbrel, you've probably already seen the price tag and felt a little overwhelmed. Here's what's actually involved - and what changes when a specialty pharmacy handles the details for you.

If your doctor just prescribed Enbrel (pronounced EN-brel; generic name etanercept), you've probably already done a few things: googled the name, seen a price tag with a lot of zeros, and maybe felt a little overwhelmed. That's normal. Here's what's actually involved in starting Enbrel - and what changes when a specialty pharmacy handles the details for you.

What Is Enbrel Used For?

Enbrel is a biologic that works by blocking a protein (TNF) involved in inflammation. It's approved for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis, ankylosing spondylitis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Your doctor prescribes it based on your specific diagnosis.

Prior authorization is paperwork, and it is ours to chase - not yours.

What Enbrel Actually Costs (And Why the Sticker Price Is Misleading)

The list price for Enbrel is real, and it's startling - commonly cited around $7,100 to $9,850 per month. But almost nobody pays that number. With commercial insurance and the Enbrel SupportPlus Copay Card, eligible patients can pay as little as $0 per month, up to $12,000 per year. If you're uninsured, the Amgen Safety Net Foundation may be able to help.

If you have Medicare, there's a significant, recent change worth knowing about: Enbrel was one of the first 10 drugs selected for Medicare's price negotiation program under the Inflation Reduction Act. As of January 1, 2026, the negotiated Medicare price dropped by roughly 67%, from about $7,106 to $2,355 per month - a substantial reduction that applies specifically to Medicare beneficiaries.

The catch is that getting to the lower number - whichever program applies to you - involves paperwork: prior authorization, savings card enrollment, and sometimes an appeal if your insurance initially denies coverage. This is the single biggest thing a specialty pharmacy does that a regular retail pharmacy doesn't.

How the Enbrel Injection Actually Works

Enbrel is given as a subcutaneous injection, typically in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm, usually once or twice weekly depending on your prescribed dose. It's available as a prefilled syringe or the Enbrel SureClick autoinjector pen. Let the device reach room temperature before injecting, as directed in its instructions. Whichever device you're prescribed, our pharmacist team walks you through your first injection before you're on your own with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much will I actually pay for Enbrel?

It depends on your insurance. Commercially insured patients can often reach $0/month with the savings card; Medicare patients benefit from the 2026 negotiated price reduction. We determine your specific cost before your first shipment.

Is there a generic version of Enbrel?

No traditional generic - Enbrel is a biologic, so any lower-cost alternative would be a biosimilar rather than a generic tablet. Two biosimilars (Eticovo and Erelzi) are currently FDA-approved.

Can Sorrento help even if I'm not in the Glendale area?

Yes - we're licensed throughout California and deliver statewide at no charge, regardless of where you live.
