Starting Dupixent (Dupilumab):
What Actually Happens

If your doctor just prescribed Dupixent, here's what's actually involved - from the real cost and DUPIXENT MyWay copay card to injection technique and what Sorrento handles for you.

← Back to Blog

If your doctor just prescribed Dupixent (pronounced doo-PIX-ent - sometimes searched online as "Duproxin"; generic name dupilumab), you've probably already done a few things: googled the name, seen a price tag with a lot of zeros, and maybe felt a little overwhelmed. That's normal. Here's what's actually involved in starting Dupixent - and what changes when a specialty pharmacy handles the details for you.

What Is Dupixent Used For?

Dupixent is a biologic that works by blocking two proteins (IL-4 and IL-13) involved in chronic inflammation. It has one of the broadest approval lists of any biologic on the market - including moderate-to-severe eczema (atopic dermatitis), eosinophilic asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, eosinophilic esophagitis, and several other inflammatory conditions. Because it covers so many different conditions, your specific reason for taking it may look quite different from another patient's - if you're ever unsure why you were prescribed Dupixent specifically, that's a great question for your care team, and our pharmacists are happy to talk through it too.

What Dupixent Actually Costs (And Why the Sticker Price Is Misleading)

The list price for Dupixent is real, and it's startling - approximately $4,193 per carton (a one-month supply of two prefilled pens or syringes) as of early 2026. But almost nobody pays that number. With commercial insurance and the DUPIXENT MyWay Copay Card, roughly two-thirds of commercially insured patients pay between $0 and $100 per month. For Medicare Part D patients, the annual out-of-pocket cap (currently $2,100) means the vast majority pay $0-$100/month once other cost-sharing is accounted for. If you're uninsured, the DUPIXENT MyWay Patient Assistance Program may be able to help based on income.

The catch is that getting to that lower number involves paperwork: prior authorization, copay card enrollment, and sometimes an appeal if your insurance initially denies coverage. This is the single biggest thing a specialty pharmacy does that a regular retail pharmacy doesn't - we handle all of it before your first shipment goes out.

How the Dupixent Injection Actually Works

A pharmacist working among pharmacy shelves

Dupixent comes as a prefilled pen or syringe. Our pharmacists walk you through your first dose before you are on your own.

Dupixent is given as a subcutaneous injection - into the fat layer just under the skin, typically in the thigh or abdomen. It comes as a prefilled pen or prefilled syringe. Let the device reach room temperature before injecting, exactly as directed in its instructions - skipping this step is one of the most common reasons patients end up delaying a dose. Whichever device you're prescribed, our pharmacist team walks you through your first injection over the phone or video before you're on your own with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much will I actually pay for Dupixent?

It depends on your insurance, but most patients pay far less than the list price once coverage and the DUPIXENT MyWay copay card are applied - we determine your specific cost before your first shipment.

Is there a generic or biosimilar version of Dupixent?

Not currently - as of 2026, Dupixent has no approved generic or biosimilar. Because it's a biologic (made from living cells, not synthesized chemically), it would need a biosimilar rather than a traditional generic, and none has been approved yet.

I was prescribed Dupixent for a different condition than my friend who also takes it - is that normal?

Yes - Dupixent is approved for many different inflammatory conditions, so two patients taking the same medication may be treating very different things. Your treatment plan is specific to your diagnosis.

Can Sorrento help even if I'm not in the Glendale area?

Yes - we're licensed throughout California and deliver statewide at no charge, regardless of where you live.
